Block 1: Foundations, Rhythms and Styles of Iraqi Dance
In this 4-week block, we’ll focus on understanding the different types of Iraqi music and dances—what’s what, how to tell them apart, and how each style looks and feels in the body. We’ll break down key rhythms and learn the essential movements that go with each one. The aim is to give you a well-rounded introduction to the core elements Iraqi dance, from folkloric styles to social dances and professional performance.
Access to quality, hands-on instruction in Iraqi dances can be tough to find, especially in person, which is why these classes are so special. Our instructor, Andrea, brings years of deep, hands-on experience, having studied directly with world-renowned experts. She’s also a familiar and beloved performer in Sydney’s Iraqi community, known for her authentic style and extensive knowledge.
