Bellydance Fundamentals: Technique (Moves and Musicality)
… is our signature course. It’s a perfect introduction to Oriental Dance, or a tune-up and refresher for those who have learnt a little already. You'll learn lots of moves - from hip drops to shimmies to circles - plus how to combine them and set them to music. Along the way you’ll also explore posture, foot and arm positions and pathways, and enjoy an intro to Arabic music and cultural aspects of the dance. By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to join the dancefloor at the next Arabic party!
The systematic course structure helps you understand and remember, plus there’s video support so you can practice in between if you choose. Improve your fitness, co-ordination, elegance, core strength and more, alongside other women who often become good friends by dancing together.
For those with some bellydance experience, your teacher will challenge you to go deeper, to refine your movements and develop finer control and elegance.
LEVEL: All Welcome. Perfect for beginners. Dancers with more experience will be invited to consolidate, deepen and refine their skills - our teachers are experts at helping you continue to improve.

Bellydance Beyond Begs: Dabke For Bellydancers
Dabke is an energetic style of folkloric dance that is part of everyday life for people of the Levant (Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria). Perhaps originally a practice where villagers came together to help stamp down mud rooves and floors, Dabke has now become an intrinsic part of the culture, practiced at every celebration. It’s centred around community, joy and political resistance.
As bellydancers, we make use of Dabke steps and stylings when we dance to Dabke music - whether traditional, modern, or fused with Arabic pop vibes. The powerful, driving rhythm, along with the singers’ calling out of encouragement, urge us to move our feet! This course will teach the foundations of dabke, and how we maintain that connection with its roots while adapting it to a bellydance context. Expect to leave this term feeling more confident in your ability to freely dance to any Dabke song, and ready to participate in the festivities at Lebanese and related parties!
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Minimum 1 year. This class is not suitable for beginners. You’re expected to be familiar and confident with all the basic moves of bellydance, as taught in our Bellydance Fundamentals Technique course, as well as putting them into combos. Moves like shimmies, hip drops and circles will not be broken down and explained. More advanced dancers are very welcome and can expect to be challenged!
Catch-up options: Recordings available
Pricing: 10 classes $105 online.

Bellydance Intermediate/ Advanced Level: Wings!
Flutter, spin, wrap, swoosh, ta-da! "Wings of Isis" are about making a big impact by filling a space. They can also be used to strategically conceal and reveal; to highlight graceful lines and turns; and as your personal backdrop for your favourite moves. In a group, their power is multiplied! Get your wings out and let's fly together. The course will include technique, combos and choreography.
For our Zoom friends, we recommend getting a smaller or "children's" pair so you can practice in smaller spaces.
As this prop requires a lot of shoulder strength and movement, it's not recommended for those with upper body injuries.
LEVEL: This more advanced class is open by invitation only, for dancers who have consistently attended class and practised for at least 2 years. Confidence with all Fundamentals and BBs techniques, ability to learn and retain combinations, developing understanding of Middle Eastern music, readiness to dive deeper. In general you should always get in touch before registering for this class if you’re not already a regular.
Catch-up options: This course is recorded on Zoom. Enrolled students may access all recordings on demand.
Pricing: $105 / 10 weeks to join us online only.

Let’s groove with world music and dance!
Making dance fitness beginner-friendly and accessible to everyone, Zumba® Gold is a low impact, gentler and easier form of Zumba Fitness. It’s perfect for you if you have injuries, are not as mobile as you once were, are recovering from injury or pregnancy, or maybe just prefer a lighter class taught at a slower pace. But don’t worry, you can still build up a sweat if you want to!
Come on a tour of the globe. You'll learn the basics of many dance styles such as Salsa, Bollywood, Merengue, Flamenco, Cha-cha, West African, Afro-Caribbean and more. But it’s not about mastering the technique: we focus on moving in the way that’s fun, safe and the perfect workout for you personally. Everyone is different, and we embrace that! On the way, you’ll build your cardio fitness, co-ordination, range of motion, memory, balance and more.
You don't need a dance background, and you don't need to be young, fit or thin (but it's also OK if you are). All you need is the desire to have fun dancing your way around the world! Each routine is introduced step-by-step at first, to make sure you understand it, then as the weeks go by we speed it up and add more routines.
LEVEL: Open to all

Open to everyone - whether you've got some yoga experience, or have never tried it before. (Non dancers are always welcome too! There’s no actual bellydance in the course; dancers will be given extra tips on how to make it relevant, but if you don’t dance, it’s still a fabulous Yoga Fundamentals course.)
A regular yoga practice supports the health of your mind and body.
Discover the physical aspects of yoga ('asana' or poses) alongside the philosophical, providing a well-rounded holistic foundation to yoga that builds from week to week. Experience benefits in strength and range of motion, as well as body awareness and mental focus. For those who have done yoga in the past, these classes will consolidate your foundations and deepen your practice.
LEVEL: All welcome. Do let us know in advance if you have any conditions that may affect your ability to participate, so Johara can plan modifications for you.
Pricing: 11 week course $132. If you’re already taking another course, such as Bellydance, the price comes down to just $87 to add this course. The discount will apply automatically at the checkout.
Why do Yoga?
Improve strength and flexibility, balance and posture.
Reduce stress, anxiety and self-judgement
Increase energy levels, concentration and focus
Gain a greater awareness of mind/body and connection to breath.
Improve joint mobility and core strength for greater freedom and ease of movement
Dancers will appreciate all of this, as well as exploring more abstract benefits that can make you a more embodied dancer. Johara has found that thanks to her yoga practise, she can allow the flow of energy from the ground, up the legs and muscles, into the core and then out the rest of the body, giving her dance more texture, feeling, depth and power. Being able to feel many levels of the body, skin, muscles, bones, joints, micro movements in all of these.... feeling all the way to fingers and toes and out. Connecting movements to breath has helped her to feel that breath in the music as phrasing, influencing how she executes the moves to the music. Plus she has uncovered more freedom during improvisation: allowing the body to lead more, with less mental interference.
Doesn’t that sound inspiring?
What do you need?
yoga mat (if possible, otherwise a large towel)
2x yoga blocks… these can be chunky books, or sturdy Tupperware containers
strap or belt
chair
blanket
a towel or two to roll up and make a bolster
enough space to lay down and stretch out
Classes are recorded and available to you for the whole term, so you can use them to practice every day if you wish!

Beyond Beginners’ Oriental Technique: Golden Era (Part 2)
Join Johara to relive the elegance and glamour of the Golden Era of Egyptian cinema, music and dance. From the 1940s to 1960s (ish), cinema reigned supreme. Stars like Taheya Karioka, Samia Gamal, Naima Akef; then later Kitty, Naemet Mokhtar, Zeinat Olwi and more became household names and defined the styles of bellydance at the time. The Golden Era is trending again now: jump on board the nostalgia train to build your technique and expression.

Bellydance Beyond BegsFolklore Flavours
The dance we love, commonly know as bellydance, is founded on folk styles from across the Middle East. Each region has its own unique flavour; they’re essential knowledge for any dancer who takes the art form seriously, while being colourful, fascinating and fun!
Each week, we’ll dive into a particular style. The smorgasbord includes authentic homestyle folk dances such as Saidi, Turkish Romany and Khaleegy; folkloric adaptations for the stage, like Nubian and Alexandrian; and historical variations from which modern bellydance has emerged.
Folklore is super fun, and it's also important to know about it if you want to develop as a dancer. Plus, there are heaps of great moves which come from folklore, that you can apply in your "regular" bellydance to expand your repertoire and add nuance to your dancing. This is one of the courses that all professionals wish we'd had as students. Luckily for you, Rachel has studied folklore for many years!

About your teacher, Tara Yasmin
Beginning in Wollongong with Cinnamon Twist Belly Dance, Tara Yasmin has grown as a dancer through taking classes internationally, travelling around the world for intensive workshops; and through dedicated personal practice. Now an experienced professional, she has performed and taught in Sydney and Melbourne for several years.
As much as she has learned from her international teachers, Tara owes her gratitude to friends and colleagues with Middle Eastern backgrounds who have generously shared their knowledge and experience. Her personal style has evolved from this combination of formal and informal tuition. The masterful demonstration of belly dance technique is important, but time spent in relaxed social settings has shown her that it is the right tunes and attitude that make the party! Above all, honouring and paying homage to the cultures of origin of Middle Eastern dance is fundamental to her dance approach.
“My aim as a Middle Eastern Dance teacher is to facilitate connection, cultivate safe and expressive dance technique while supporting a kind, joyful, and most of all FUN class environment. My experience as a belly dance performer and teacher over the years has emphasised to me that connection to culture, ourselves, the dance community, and our audience is the heart of our art form. I'm looking forward to connecting, laughing and dancing with you!”

Bellydance Fundamentals Plus: Baladi Choreo
Discover the warmth and earthiness of Egyptian baladi dance in this 10-week choreography course.
This fundamentals course explores the joyful spirit of Baladi through a playful choreography to El Helwa Di, the beloved classic composed by the legendary Egyptian musician Sayed Darwish. The title translates roughly as “This Beautiful One,” and the song is rich in character and everyday storytelling. Its lyrics portray the life of the working class in early 20th-century Egypt, capturing the humour and dignity of daily life while celebrating the beauty and charm of life. This makes it the perfect introduction to one of Egypt’s most loved social dance styles.
Throughout the course, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of baladi as both a dance style and a cultural expression. We’ll explore the grounded movement quality, expressive musicality and cheeky, confident personality that make baladi so engaging, while building a choreography that is fun to dance and full of authentic feeling.
Level: Not suitable for absolute beginners. Fundamentals Plus is for those with some bellydance experience already (at least one term), who want to progress further in their musical understanding, technique and expression. Makes a perfect pair with our 6.30pm class (and enjoy a big discount for taking both!)
Pricing: 10 classes $180 per person.
