Bellydance Beyond Begs: Awalim Technique, Aesthetic and Choreo

Step back in time to discover the Awalim — professional urban dancers of 19th-century Cairo and the Nile Delta — whose style helped shape modern Egyptian Raqs Sharqi.

This course explores their raw, earthy, and energetic dance style with a grounded feel and low centre of gravity. You’ll learn key Awalim movements, explore their musicality, and discover how the dance connects to the music and social setting of the time. While Awalim dance is traditionally improvisational, we’ll use short, accessible combinations to help you embody the style and apply it confidently to era-specific music. The course will build towards a group routine, making it perfect for dancers who enjoy learning through context and performance.

Johara has developed a passion for this style through extensive training under world-leading researchers. She blend strong technique and expert body awareness with historical insight, creating lessons full of details that will bring new richness to your dancing.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Minimum 1 year. This class is not suitable for beginners. You’re expected to be familiar and confident with all the basic moves of bellydance, as taught in our Bellydance Fundamentals Technique course, as well as putting them into combos. Moves like shimmies, hip drops and circles will not be broken down and explained. More advanced dancers are very welcome and can expect to be challenged!

Online-only course to enable students to attend from anywhere. Pricing: $120 for 10 weeks (with discounts for taking multiple courses).

RECORDINGS AVAILABLE: This class will be recorded for those who can’t attend in real time. You can catch up or review it at a time that suits you.
