Hacha’a - Context, Technique and Combos

In this new block, we’ll explore the vibrant and expressive Hacha’a style. Expand your Iraqi dance repertoire with fresh movements, textures, and musicality. You’ll learn foundational techniques, characteristic styling, and how to embody the playful yet powerful energy that defines this genre. You’ll learn why daggers are incorporated in the dance, and how they are handled safely and expressively within the movement vocabulary.

Women only, private space. Hijabi women welcome.

This course contains moves that are not suitable for dancers with neck injuries.
No catch-up lessons or recordings are available, and no credits will be issued for non-attendance. Please only book if you can actually attend - we don’t want you to miss a thing!

Our instructor, Andrea, brings years of deep, hands-on experience, having studied directly with world-renowned master teachers through many hours of private lessons. She’s also a familiar and beloved performer in Sydney’s Iraqi community, known for her authentic style. As a teacher, Andrea is encouraging and experienced.

  • Week 1 class (26 Feb) is an online lesson covering rhythms and music, cultural aspects and more - an important prerequisite for the dance! You’ll need to provide your own device with Zoom app and internet connection. (See out “Online Classes” info page if you need help.)

  • Weeks 2-5, throughout March, are face-to-face classes in the studio.
